ROUTE NOTES:
Guests arriving by car:
The usual Naples Airport-Ravello route is a little tricky to navigate for first-time visitors. Part of the route crosses a high mountain pass, the Valico di Chiunzi, which can be somewhat hazardous in bad weather (e.g. winter snow & ice, heavy rain &/or fog.)
The pass is sometimes temporarily closed in these conditions, in which case, the recommended alternative is to retreat back to the A3 motorway, go south to Salerno, then take the usually all-weather coast road (the Amalfi Drive), sign-posted out of Salerno to the Costiera Amalfitana. The drive along the “endlessly bendy” road takes 30 minutes, or more, to the turn-off (right) to Ravello at Castiglione, a mile or so before Amalfi
The route
Arrival from Naples, the c. 37 miles’ journey to Ravello takes about an hour – more if traffic is heavy. The route is via motorway (A3 signed to Salerno & Reggio Calabria), leaving at the exit for the town of Angri. Summary directions from there are as follow…
Turn left onto the suburban road & go sempre diritto (‘always straight’), ignoring all turn-off junctions, for a couple of kilometres until a turn-off to the right, signed ‘Costiera Amalfitana’ The sign is easily missed (look for it immediately after passing a Necropolis-type cemetery on the left).
Once on the right road, heading up a mountain, Ravello is well signed-posted all the way across a spectacular, “alpine” pass, the Valico di Chiunzi.
In Ravello: On entry into the outskirts of the village, stay on the same road (ignoring a right turn into a tunnel) until it ends at the entrance to a second, smaller tunnel leading to the main piazza. ‘The Garden’ is on the left, facing the bus terminus just before the tunnel.
